  2. Make ready 1/2 tea spoon Turmeric powder

  5. Get 1 tablespoon Bengal gram
  6. Prepare 1/2 tablespoon coriander seeds
  7. Make ready 5-7 Dried red chillies
  8. Make ready 1/2 tea spoon Methi seeds
  9. Take As required Small lemon sized Tamarind
  10. Prepare 2 teaspoons Oil

Sambar is a dish in South Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil cuisines, made of toor dal and veggies, sambar masala. Sambhar synonyms, Sambhar pronunciation, Sambhar translation, English dictionary definition of Sambhar. n. Any of various large deer of the genus Cervus, especially C. unicolor of southern Asia. You know nothing would disappoint you more to see a plate of puffy hot idlis or piping hot dosa without its must-have accompaniment-sambhar.

Steps to make Sambhar:
  1. Soak tamarind in water.
  2. Add toor dal and turmeric to two cups of water and cook in a pressure cooker to two whistles.
  3. Add oil in a pan and fry bengal gram, coriander seeds, dried red chillies and methi seeds in medium flame.
  4. Powder the fried stuff when it got completely cooled (Sambhar powder).
  5. Cook the soaked tamarind along with any vegetables as your wish for five minutes in a pan (I used chopped ladies finger here; you can have chopped carrots, tomatoes, drumsticks, onions, etc)
  6. Add the Sambhar powder.
  7. Now mash the cooked toor dal and add it to the pan along with salt.
  8. If you wish you can add some mustard fried in ghee.
  9. Serve hot sambhar with rice, idli or dosa.
