  4. Bake for 35-45 mins or until golden. Test with a skewer, if inserted into the middle of the cake and it comes out clean then the cake is mostly cooked through.
  5. Allow to cool until able to handle cake tin with hands. Carefully transfer to a cooling rack.
  6. Serve with custard or cream. It is better when the cake is warm.

I've converted it to metric and made the recipe more specific. This traditional British apple cake is fabulously moist with a slightly crisp topping. Pour the batter into the tin and level it off. Mini Dorset apple cakes for little people. But the traditional recipe is for a large, plain looking fruit cake, not the usual sort of treat to appeal to young children.
